Project description

A web-based remote laboratory system enabling students and researchers to operate physical experiments safely and online.

Timeline

3-month internship project involving prototype design, WebSocket-based interaction support, integration testing, and system testing.

Background

MetaLab Remote Laboratory was developed during the COVID-19 period through a collaboration between a technology company and universities. The project aimed to reduce the risk of offline infection by enabling students and researchers to remotely operate laboratory equipment through a web-based control platform.

The system allowed users to access experiment interfaces online, send operation commands to physical devices, receive real-time status feedback, and complete experimental tasks without being physically present in the lab.

Process

This category details the step-by-step approach taken during the project, including research, planning, design, development, testing, and optimization phases.

Research & Planning

Analysed the basic needs of remote laboratory users, including students, teachers, and experiment operators. Focused on translating offline experiment procedures into a clear web-based operation flow, making the interface easier to follow while reducing operation errors and ensuring accurate experiment execution and data reading.

Design & Prototyping

Designed interface prototypes using Mockplus and MasterGo, covering experiment selection, operation panels, device control areas, command feedback, and status display. The goal was to make complex experiment steps easier to understand through structured page layouts and clear interaction logic.

Implementation

Supported the improvement of experiment operation pages with WebSocket-based communication features. This allowed the interface to send commands, receive responses, and display device status changes in real time, creating a stronger connection between user actions and physical equipment feedback.

Testing & Optimization

Conducted integration testing and system testing across different experiment operation scenarios. Documented interface issues, command feedback problems, and functional inconsistencies, then followed up with the team to improve system reliability, interaction accuracy, and overall user experience.

Solution & Results

Solution & Results

Solution & Results

The resulting AI-powered scheduling app offers a seamless user experience, allowing individuals and businesses to effortlessly manage their schedules.

Online Experiment Booking

Students can book available experiment time slots through the user portal, enter the experiment room online, and start the remote laboratory session based on the scheduled time.

Remote Equipment Operation

Users can remotely control laboratory instruments through the web interface, observe real-time device feedback, record experiment data, and complete electronic lab reports.

Admin & Teaching Management

Teachers and administrators can manage experiment equipment and user accounts through admin accounts, monitor students’ experiment progress, review experiment records, and grade submitted results.
